You’d have to be there, to believe it, but smoking in the UK is extremely expensive, probably the most expensive in the world, really, and by far the most expensive in Europe. Just imagine…a pack of 20 cigarettes costs over 5.25 pounds. That’s almost 8 euros and over 10 dollars for a pack. Makes you think of giving up, right?
Actually, that’s what the British Government thought. The Cancer Reform Strategy is a plan implemented by the British leaders to determine the British folk to quit smoking. How, exactly? Well, by selling cigarettes at extremely high prices.
Jean King, Cancer Research UK’s director of tobacco control, said: “High cigarette prices are key to reducing smoking. This study shows that the availability of low or untaxed cigarettes can undermine the public health benefit of increased cigarette excise taxes".
“In the UK where cigarettes are relatively expensive (about twice the cost of US cigarettes) it seems that high prices are encouraging people to search for places where they can buy low or untaxed cigarettes”.
As part of its “Cancer Reform Strategy”, the UK Government is planning to consider proposals which it is claimed will help reduce smoking among teenagers. These proposals may include:
1. The restriction of tobacco product displays at the point of sale;
2. The prohibition of packs of cigarettes less than 20;
3. The introduction of a retailer licensing scheme;
4. The prohibition of tobacco vending machines
This is not all. You, as a normal cigarette smoking working man, can be fined by smoking at your job. How is that? Well, employers are encouraged to spy on staff to enforce the ban on smoking in public places in England under Government regulations made public yesterday.
These forms will provide sufficient evidence for town halls to levy £50 fines. If any individual fails to provide assistance or information to the state's inspectors when requested, they can be fined £1,000. Managers who fail to stop someone smoking in defiance of the ban face a fine of up to £2,500.
The guidance authorizes the use of undercover and "intrusive" surveillance, which includes devices such as hidden cameras. In other words, trust no one when smoking ciggs!
Here’s a list of places where you can and can't smoke:
Sports stadiums
Yes as long is there is no roof
No if it is a stadium of any Football League club
Offices at Home
Yes if only you work there
No if a work colleague regularly visits you
Vicars' studies
Yes if you alone work there
No if they receive any visitors
Office smoking rooms
No These are now banned except for on offshore oil rigs, Royal Navy submarines and ships, where it is difficult to smoke safely outside
Prison
Yes if it is in their cell
No if it is in communal areas
Care homes
Yes in a special smoking room or their own bedroom
No if it is in communal areas
Hotels
Yes in a specially designated smoking bedrooms, not in any other areas
Offshore oil rigs
Yes in a special smoking room, for safety reasons
Vehicles used for work
Yes if only you ever drive it
No if another person regularly uses it, regardless if they are in the vehicle at the time
Specialist tobacco shops

No for lengthy smoking sessions
Cigar clubs
No except for outside
Pubs
No except for outside
Restaurants
No except for outside
Bus stops
Yes if it has no sides
No if it has sides and a roof
So, you can’t even smoke in a pub, or a restaurant. Not even at a football match. And if you find a place where you can puff, you’ll have to dig deep in your pocket, to buy a pack. The law is extremely restrictive in the United Kingdom, but the dangers of smoking are terrifying. So, my advice to you is…not only when in Britain, better eat some fruit than smoke your lungs.
