I (mom) work as a doctor as well in Edinburgh. We might have my husband’s mother come from India to help us with childcare as well. The reason why we have requested my mother in law to come from India as well to help us is that my husband is not at home, I have to work night on calls and long days sometimes. We would someone who is ideally able to drive own car and be able to pick up and drop the children when I am at work.We are a caring and loving small family and we would want someone whith adequate exprerience to look after the children.one child will be going to preschool and the other child will be going to nursery 2-3 days per week. We will be able to provide au pair with room to use of her own. Ref_Ruth

McGrigor family. Location: Northern Scotland. Rural location. Start date: ASAP. Pocket money 100+/week. Family is willing to offer more for extra hours. Children: age 12 boy; age 9 girl; age 7 girl; age 3 girl. Pets: Cats, dogs, hens. They have 4 children at home and two older ones at University (23, 21, 12, 9, 7, 3). Mother is at home. Two children (12, 9 yr old) are at boarding school (most of the time not home) and the two youngest are at the local village school. We live in a very rural area, on a farm. There is a bus that goes to Oban and Glasgow x3 a day from the end of our drive. The au pair has her own room, desk, tv. She has her own bathroom except when we have guests staying. We include the au pair in everything we do. Because we live in a very rural area the hours the au pair works must be flexible. ie if I go to Glasgow shopping the au pair can come too and take time off to do her own shopping when we are there, but not start saying Oh I was in the car for 5 hours today so thats counted in the hours and I am off duty when we get back.... If I am taking her for her to have a good time and see new places and experiences, I expect a little give and take in a rural situation.. I do not expect au pairs to count hours and be rigid time keepers. If we are out fishing and we get back late, thats part of our life. We would not come home early so the au pair can `clock off'. There are English classes in Oban and a language school in Inveraray and the au pair is free to make her own arrangements with these and attend classes as she wishes. We travel in the summer, we go to London, Edinburgh, Womad festival, Isle of Coll, and to stay with friends around the country. The au pair comes with us. The au pair can take holiday more or less when she wishes, I have never had a dispute about the weeks they choose to date. I try to book these in advance, so they get the cheaper fares home and I get advance warning too. There is usually a car for the au pair to use only if she is a confident driver. She is not required to do any driving for my children or any school runs. There is usually plenty of time each day for study and there is a computer available for her use in the evenings. I also have a UK mobile phone for her to use in this country. I expect her to have this with her all the time and I will put money on and all the relevant numbers she is going to need. If she uses this for her personal use thats fine, but she must top up too. I do not expect au pairs to sit texting on their phone or emailing during the day. This leads to children falling off the trampoline or getting into similar dangerous situations without her full attention. Our youngest is still only 3 years old. Housework is quite light, I am not a fussy ironer, and only iron sheets and shirts. If the sun is shining we will all go out and pick apples for instance or walk up the hill and do no housekeeping that day. If I am away for the day there is a cat and two dogs to walk and feed and hens to open and shut. I very very rarely leave the au pair alone with the children, except for babysitting and there is very rarely a week when she is required to babysit two nights. My husband is a busy Member of Parliament, so there are occasional dinners and functions in the house which can go on quite late, but which I do need help with. The au pair MUST like living in a remote area, MUST be happy with her own company, and if she has a hobby like dancing, football, singing etc, I will try my utmost to integrate her in the local classes, choir etc. There are no other au pairs in the vicinity, so she will meet and make freinds with Scottish people and her English will improve very quickly. Finally I think it is important to state that an au pair in our family is the most important person after myself. I value au pairs very highly, and trust her with my children, so she is highly respected and much loved. We have many au pairs that return for visits and send us updates on their lives. Ref_Rut

Smith family. Need someone to come and help for 25-35 hours or so a week. 75% childcare and 25% chores,(light domestic eg toy tidying, vacuuming, kitchen & laundry help). Even though there are 4 children: 13,10,3 and 9 months old, it will be very rare that you are required to look after all of them at the same time. The older two children are at school so it is mostly Darach the 3 year old who needs looked after, the baby stays with mum mostly as he is still very attached (breastfeeding) but this will change as he weans. After the summer holidays Darach will go to Nursery 3 mornings a week. We have a separate garage that has been converted to two rooms with a small toilet with wash-hand basin. One of these rooms would be your private space, the other room would be used by Mum for a few hours during the day as an office space and in the evening by you as a living room. There is a small fridge, microwave, kettle and toaster here for breakfast & light snacks. We would expect you to eat with the family though. We anticipate that you would work Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday for 3-5 hours. On Wednesday you would need to work a whole day. In addition to this you would maybe be required to work one/two evenings a month at the weekend. £80/ week. ASAP start.
